Remastering The 2015 Eden Shorts Films

The entrants of the 2015 competition visited UKTV to take a look behind the scenes and rework their short wildlife films.

Eden Shorts' Tom Young at UKTV

Eden Shorts commended entrant Tom Young re-recording his narration in an audio booth at UKTV.

After the brilliant success of the first year's wildlife film competition entries, we wanted to make sure we got more hands-on with the second year of shortlisted Eden Shorts filmmakers.

Alongside the chance to rework their film using our professional video and audio production suites, the shortlisted entrants were invited into the UKTV offices to take a look at the hidden workings of a television company and meet some of the people that work in the business.

Alongside producing Eden Shorts Sam Pearson created instructional guides from seasoned wildlife professionals including Chris Packham and Nigel Marven.

The Visit

Having stopped for a quick photo with some of the features of the UKTV offices, the most popular proving Gold's dead parrot sculpture from Monty Python Live, the Eden Shorts entrants had the opportunity to take a look around before sitting down with some of the people that keep a TV business ticking over.

First up was a quick overview of how we select which programmes we show, what kind of editorial and financial decisions go into that process and how we ultimately schedule them for transmission. Following that was a meeting with the commissioning team who gave an overview of the production process before sitting down with a producer to give some tips on storytelling and filming techniques from their own films.

Remastering The Films

UKTV's brand new production facility includes video editing and audio production suites, giving the opportunity for the Eden Shorts entrants to have a go at perfecting their already superb films.

Firstly, our editors gave an overview of the technical specifications and showed how to colour grade and how to use some of the more complex tools in edit software before moving on into the audio suite.

The entrants were shown how to apply additional sound effects to help give an added depth to their films with the added benefit of being able to re-record their narration in a professional recording booth. Here, our filmmakers were able to tweak their scripts or apply any hints and tips that came up during their previous discussions.

All-in-all it was a fantastic day, and an honour to meet some very inspiring people. Hopefully, we'll see some of the things they picked up in their future films.

You can watch the reworked films here or catch them on Eden channel soon.
